Risan - Montenegro

From a ceremonial arrival by ship to formations and gladiator duels, Risan’s Roman night transforms the harbor into a stage of living history.

The Legion in Risan

In Risan, Montenegro, the Legion performs from sunset into the summer night, bringing Roman ceremony to the harbor at the height of July’s heat. The evening begins at the town’s large port, where the emperor and vexillifer arrive to greet the gathered crowd, speak with visitors, and give interviews to the local media. As anticipation builds, a wooden ship sets sail toward the harbor, carrying the legionaries to shore for their grand arrival.

Once disembarked, the soldiers form ranks along the waterfront and present their full set of formations, surrounded closely by the public. The display continues with a hollow orbem, creating the arena for three gladiatorial bouts, with the audience deciding each loser’s fate through the ancient signals of vita or iugula. When the combat ends, the Legion closes the night by sharing fruit and refreshments before marching out of the harbor in Roman order.
